Environmental and Reuse Policy

1. Purpose and commitment

ToroMobile aims to extend the useful life of mobile devices, reduce unnecessary replacement demand and support responsible resource use. We will describe environmental outcomes accurately and will not claim that every device is reused or that an avoided-emissions figure is certain unless we can evidence it.

2. Scope

This policy applies to device enquiries, quotations, collection decisions, intake checks, storage, assessment, resale preparation and any downstream transfer arising from ToroMobile’s UK operations.

3. Product and waste boundary

A used electrical item is not automatically waste. Its classification depends on its condition, the holder’s intention, the intended route and whether the applicable reuse conditions are met. ToroMobile assesses consignments before acceptance and again at intake. A commercial value or a description such as ‘used’ does not by itself prove that an item is a product rather than waste.

We reject consignments that we know or reasonably believe are waste. We do not collect or transport waste unless the registrations and controls required for that activity are in place.

4. Acceptance for reuse

Before accepting devices as products, ToroMobile seeks evidence proportionate to the consignment, which may include:

• confirmation that the organisation owns the devices or has authority to sell them;

• an asset list with device types, identifiers, working status and known defects;

• confirmation that the devices were working up to collection or are reasonably expected to require no more than minor repair before reuse;

• evidence that the intention is reuse of the whole device, not disposal;

• a visual or functional check where practicable, together with evidence of residual commercial value and a realistic reuse market; and

• packaging and transport arrangements designed to protect devices and batteries from damage.

Devices described as damaged or faulty are accepted only where ToroMobile reasonably concludes that they remain products suitable for reuse or minor repair. Devices that are genuinely end-of-life or destined for dismantling as waste are outside the current purchase model.

5. Intake decisions

Devices are checked against the supplied asset information and screened for condition, safety, ownership concerns and reuse potential. ToroMobile may accept, regrade, quarantine or reject an item. Product devices and suspected waste are not mixed. Records are kept to support the decision and downstream route.

6. Items identified as waste after receipt

If an item is identified as WEEE or other waste after receipt, it is segregated from saleable product, labelled and stored securely. ToroMobile does not treat or transport that waste under its current model. Collection and treatment are arranged through an appropriately authorised downstream provider, with relevant transfer and destination evidence retained.

7. Battery and fire controls

ToroMobile maintains a premises fire-risk assessment covering lithium-ion batteries. Staff visually check devices and isolate swollen, damaged, hot, leaking or otherwise suspect batteries from normal stock. Suspect items are not charged and are placed in a suitable designated location away from combustible materials pending a safe, authorised route.

Charging and testing are supervised, use suitable equipment and take place on a controlled surface away from unnecessary combustible material. Escape routes and fire precautions are kept clear, and relevant personnel receive instructions on isolation, incident reporting and emergency action.

8. Downstream due diligence

Before using a downstream provider for waste, reuse, repair or recycling, ToroMobile checks the provider’s identity, relevant permissions and intended destination. Evidence is reviewed periodically and retained with transfer or collection records. ToroMobile currently uses an authorised, verified downstream route for any item that becomes waste after intake.

9. Measurement and claims

We prioritise outcomes supported by evidence: devices purchased, devices released for reuse, devices rejected, and items routed to an authorised downstream provider. Any carbon, waste-diversion or social-impact claim will identify its method, assumptions and period and will be updated if better evidence becomes available.

10. Responsibilities and review

Management is responsible for keeping this policy, the acceptance criteria, fire controls and downstream checks current. The policy is reviewed at least annually and sooner if the operating model, premises, legal classification or downstream route changes.
